The Power of Being Present
Though he had the means to explore the world, Adam R. Scripps chose to keep his world close — settling in Fredericksburg, Texas, and surrounding himself with the people who mattered most: his family, friends, and neighbors.
It was there, in the heart of a close-knit community, that his passion for giving back truly flourished. He believed in supporting what he could see — local people, local needs, and local initiatives.
That belief lives on through the work of ARSF, which remains deeply committed to strengthening Local Communities. Guided by compassion, humility, generosity, and love of neighbor, the Foundation works to create lasting, meaningful change — right where it matters most.
Supporting Others, Not Seeking Recognition
Adam believed deeply in the power of philanthropy — but he preferred to give quietly, without seeking the spotlight. One of his earliest and most personal contributions was a continuing education scholarship for local high school seniors. Unique in its flexibility, the scholarship empowers students from the Fredericksburg Independent School District to pursue a post-secondary path of their choosing.
As an aviation enthusiast, Adam was disheartened that more young people didn’t have access to the joy of flying. That concern sparked his support for organizations that introduce youth to aviation and inspire them to explore careers in the field.
Because of his humility, much of Adam’s generosity went unpublicized. But at his celebration of life, friends and neighbors shared stories revealing the quiet depth of his impact: helping someone buy a car, repairing a broken-down tractor, or covering a grocery bill at the checkout line — not for recognition, simply because he could.
A Legacy of Local Impact Continued
When the Adam R. Scripps Foundation was established, Local Community was identified as a core focus area — a way to continue Adam’s commitment to place-based giving. Through Community Development Grants and Community Development Loans, the Foundation supports the communities that meant the most to Adam: Fredericksburg, Texas, and any areas connected to members of the Advisory Board or the extended Scripps family.
One area where ARSF’s local investment is making a dramatic and even life-saving difference is in support of rural fire departments. In 2024 alone, the Foundation awarded several grants to help local stations expand their facilities, refurbish outdated equipment, and acquire new tools critical to their work.
The importance of this support was evident during the Crabapple Fire near Fredericksburg. Containing the blaze — which ultimately burned more than 9,800 acres — required more than 150 hours of coordinated response from multiple fire departments. Their ability to work together, rely on each other, and act swiftly under pressure reflects the spirit of local resilience that ARSF aims to strengthen.
That same spirit of service and interconnectedness resonates in other areas where ARSF is working to strengthen local communities — including access to recreation, nature, and mobility.
In 2021, the Foundation funded Friends of Disabled Adults & Children (FODAC), following their selection as a finalist in the Scripps Family Impact Fund. Through that partnership, ARSF was introduced to Aimee Copeland, a FODAC beneficiary and founder of the Aimee Copeland Foundation.
One of her foundation’s signature initiatives, All Terrain Georgia, provides all-terrain wheelchairs — free of charge — for individuals with mobility impairments, empowering them to explore Georgia’s state parks and natural areas. Created in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, this program exemplifies how thoughtful, inclusive support can open the world to those often left on the margins.
Because ARSF’s Local Community focus includes parks, greenspaces, and access to recreation, this grant represents more than just a financial investment — it’s a meaningful expression of family philanthropy in action, rooted in care for both people and place.
A Legacy of Compassion in Action
From a quiet act of kindness at a grocery store to grantmaking that supports entire communities, the Adam R. Scripps Foundation’s commitment to local impact remains deeply personal. It reflects Adam’s belief that change needn’t be loud to be lasting — and that investing in the places we call home creates ripples of hope, resilience, and opportunity.
ARSF’s efforts continue to honor the places, people, and passions that shaped Adam’s life. As the Foundation evolves, its focus remains steady: to act locally, give generously, and help change the world — beginning with our own neighborhoods.
