Adam R. Scripps

Born into a tradition of altruism, it is no surprise that Adam Rocha Scripps was influenced by the relentless commitment to helping others demonstrated by three generations of his close-knit family.

One of 12 children, Adam was born a twin in Pecos, Texas on February 6, 1959, and he lived all of his 60 years in his beloved home state.

Known as quiet, humble and compassionate, Adam is perhaps most remembered for his huge heart and seemingly infinite good cheer. Unfailingly optimistic, Adam’s high spirits often lifted the spirits of all those around him, and he was never slow to flash his authentic, infectious smile.

Adam’s obvious joy for life manifested itself through his many and varied passions. He loved music and dancing and was no stranger to a two-step. He had a passion for fast engines in boats, cars or planes, for which he had a particular fondness.

His beloved dog, Bebe, instilled in him a deep empathy and compassion for animals of all kinds and all sizes.

At the top of things that Adam loved was his family. A loving sibling and devoted uncle, he was often the one his nieces and nephews reached out to for assistance and guidance, and Adam was always there to help.

Many people see someone in need and look the other way. When Adam Scripps saw someone in need, he took action. Not empty gestures; real, life-changing action. The best example is known only to those closest to him because he never drew attention to his good works, but Adam was always moved when he drove past the local laundromat and saw a young mother trying to keep her sanity while juggling her kids and piles of dirty clothes. He commonly would go in and offer to drive her to the local appliance store where he would buy her a washer and dryer to be delivered to her home. In the world of global philanthropy, it is a small, simple act … but to that family, Adam immeasurably improved their quality of life.

about-adam-map-location

In 1981, his family moved from their farm in Balmorhea to Fredericksburg, Texas.

Adam found a community he would grow to love and care about deeply for the rest of his life.

Driven by an instinct to help those in need, Adam sought to benefit his community in ways large and small, while never seeking recognition for his contributions. For a man of significant means, he was in no hurry to spend it on himself.

It is Adam’s demonstrated generosity and genuine compassion for other people that drive us today. Rooted in his desire to use the resources he was given to create meaningful and lasting change, The Adam R. Scripps Foundation will change the world in ways he never could have dreamed, guided by the values he and his family held most dear.
